Physicians for a National Health Program is a single issue organization advocating a universal, comprehensive single-payer national health program. PNHP has more than 19,000 members and chapters across the United States.

Since 1987, we've advocated for reform in the U.S. health care system. We educate physicians and other health professionals about the benefits of a single-payer system--including fewer administrative costs and affording health insurance for the 50 million Americans who have none.

Our members and physician activists work toward a single-payer national health program in their communities. PNHP performs ground breaking research on the health crisis and the need for fundamental reform, coordinates speakers and forums, participates in town hall meetings and debates, contributes scholarly articles to peer-reviewed medical journals, and appears regularly on national television and news programs advocating for a single-payer system.

PNHP is the only national physician organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to implementing a single-payer national health program.

The NM Network of Health Professionals for a National Health Program (NHP Squared) is the NM affiliate of PNHP.

Dr. Andy Coates is president of Physicians for a National Health Program. Dr. Coates is assistant professor of medicine and psychiatry at Albany Medical College and practices hospital medicine at a community hospital in upstate New York. In addition, Dr. Coates serves as medical director of a publicly owned county nursing home. He also sees patients on home visits and helps out at two outpatient clinics.

Board certified in internal medicine as well as hospice and palliative care medicine, Dr. Coates graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Coates is chair of the Capital District chapter of PNHP and a national board member of PNHP. He previously served on the statewide executive board of the Public Employees Federation, AFL-CIO, and founded Single Payer New York, a statewide grassroots coalition of single-payer organizations and activists. He provides commentary on WAMC Northeast Public Radio.

Public Health Region 2 is busy planning the September school health update.  More information and a registration form will be posted on NMPHA's website in the near future.  CEUs for nurses and social workers are pending (and we're looking at getting cultural competence CEUs for social workers too).  Our agenda includes presentations on child abuse awareness, tattooing safety and symbolisms, musical influences of youth, and how school nurses and social workers can collaborate to make for a healthy school environment for students.  The update will be held in Santa Fe, at the State Personnel Office auditorium (2600 Cerrillos Road).  The fee (which includes breakfast and 2 snacks) is $15.  Lunch is on-your-own.  For more information, please contact Kate Daniel (katharine.daniel@state.nm.us)
