Founding Executive Director of Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers. Families USA’s mission is to achieve high-quality, affordable health coverage for everyone in the U.S.

The NMPHA Annual Health Policy Legislative Forum provides a unique opportunity for organizations and individuals working to improve community health to come together, learn, discuss timely issues, and share their legislative proposals for the upcoming legislative session. Organizations are given a chance to make brief statements about their legislative proposals, and a booklet containing summary information about their proposals is distributed widely. Participants can identify allies and possible collaborators, as well as request support from NMPHA and other participating organizations.

Highlights of the 2012 Forum include:

  • The morning plenary, entitled "Health Reform Update: Implementation Policy Decisions Ahead!"
featuring  Trisha Brooks, a senior fellow with the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University will provide a national status report on health reform implementation; New Mexico economist Kelly O’Donnell will provide an overview of the financial impacts of policy choices that lie ahead regarding the ACA in NM; Deputy Secretary of the NM Human Services Department, Brent Earnest, will summarize the status of their plans regarding Centennial Care, the proposed changes to Medicaid, and implementation of state Health Insurance Exchanges; Kelsey McCowan Heilman, Staff Attorney with the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, will present an advocate's perspective on the importance of full health reform implementation; and NM State Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino will preview the challenges for health reform that lie ahead in the upcoming 60-day legislative session.

  • The luncheon keynote presentation by Ron Pollack, Founder and Executive Director of Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers. Families USA’s mission is to achieve high-quality, affordable health coverage for everyone in the U.S.
  • Afternoon breakout sessions, to feature workshops on Evidence-Informed Health Policy Making, Food Security, Innovative Models for Health Equity, Substance Abuse, Critical Health Literacy, and many more.
