Rishi

Keynote speaker: Rishi Manchanda, MD

Rishi Manchanda is a physician and public health innovator. He is the medical director of a clinic for homeless Veterans in Los Angeles, president and founder of HealthBegins, a startup that helps healthcare deliver better care for patients and communities with social needs, and the founder of RxDemocracy, a nonpartisan healthcare coalition that supports civic engagement.

The NMPHA Annual Health Policy Legislative Forum provides a unique opportunity for organizations and individuals working to improve community health to come together, learn, discuss timely issues, and share their legislative proposals for the upcoming legislative session. Organizations are given a chance to make brief statements about their legislative proposals, and a booklet containing summary information about their proposals is distributed widely. Participants can identify allies and possible collaborators, as well as request support from NMPHA and other participating organizations.

Highlights of the 2013 Forum include:

The morning plenary, entitled "ACA Kicks in; NMHIX Opens for Biz; Medicaid Expansion/Centennial Care; and more!" will bring together a panel of experts and leaders to provide brief updates on such critical developments as the NM Health Exchange (Board Chairman, J.R. Damron), Centennial Care and the Medicaid Expansion (Medicaid Director, Julie Weinberg), the community health and prevention aspects of the Affordable Care Act and the prevention priorities of the Department of Health (Secretary Retta Ward), a summary of the interim work and priorities of the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee (Chairman Roger Madalena, invited) and an advocates perspective by James Jimenez, the new Director of Policy, Research and Advocacy Integration at Voices for Children.

The luncheon keynote presentation by Rishi Manchanda,  physician and public health innovator, will discuss The Upstreamists: How a new model for the healthcare workforce can dramatically improve the nation's health.

Afternoon breakout sessions, to feature workshops on the Behavioral Health situation in New Mexico, Early Childhood, Hospital Community Benefit, Public Health 101, and many more!
